I debated if I should even title this “Week 1” because I really want to avoid getting into my brain that this is the start of my wellness journey. Why? Because in my mind if it has a start then it has a stop. I don’t want my journey to ever stop. It may evolve, it may transform, but it won’t stop. I have so many times jumped into a diet or workout program only to take two steps forward and one hundred steps back.

Here is the thing about me. I am a perfectionist. If something doesn’t go perfectly then I just throw my hands in the air and say “What’s the point?!”. Then I go crazy eating all of the foods that got me to this point. I think I have finally come to terms with the fact that my relationship with food is unhealthy. I go through times where I feel like I need to avoid “bad” food like the plague. Like looking at that ice cream (yes sweets are my vice) will make me gain 10 pounds. Then when I finally give myself an inch, I take ten thousand miles.

So here is my focus in this week. This is not a start to a journey that will end in a few days when I mess up. No, this week I am focusing on starting some healthier habits, reinforcing some habits I have already put into place, and praying that God gives me the strength to say no to things that ultimately will not benefit this body He has blessed me with.

So- to sum it up this is what I will be working on this week.

1. Habits I Will Be Implementing This Week:

Hydration: This week I plan to start drinking at least 80 oz of water everyday. If I start to feel like I need more, than I will lean into that.

Fruit and Vegetable Intake: This week I am aiming for 1 serving of fruit or vegetables with every meal. I’m not counting calories this week or starting any crazy diet. Counting calories and getting serious about a deficit or maintenance phase may come. But not this week. It is a really busy week in my household and I don’t have the capacity to start anything crazy. So instead of restricting, we are adding more nutrients.

2. Habits I Will Be Reinforcing This Week

Movement: Move more. Specifically, I am working on that step count. Two 20 minute walks a day. Preferably at least one outside.

3. Stay Active In Prayer

Finally, when I start to run to food for comfort, joy, or simply to keep from being bored, I am going to try to run to my Father. For too long have I been using these foods as a crutch for different emotions and feelings, when all along my Heavenly Father is right there to lean on.

This week when the feelings of overwhelm or the feelings of boredom start to creep in, I will turn to Jesus. Before I sit down with a bag of chips and mindlessly eat the entire bag, I will turn to Jesus. When I feel frustrated because I made a poor dietary decision that ultimately didn’t make me feel good, I will turn to Jesus.

This all may seem a little simple and underwhelming, but I’ve spent about a year and a half saying that I will start making better choices when it comes to my health and I have yet to do that. So, this week we start making better choices. They may be small, but they will be better choices than I made last week.

What better choices are you going to make this week to improve your health?
