I wouldn’t exactly call myself an extroverted person. I don’t have a packed social calendar, but there always seems to be a special event or party right around the corner.

Right now we are in the season of grad parties, barbeques, pool parties, weddings- the list goes on and on. At all of these events there are so many tempting options that, lets face it, don’t always align with our goals.

In this season where I am trying to lose weight and take back control of my food choices, these events can be really intimidating. So, here is what I am doing to enjoy these events AND hit my goals. One barbeque on the weekend does not need to completely derail your progress.

  1. Don’t starve yourself before the event. This should go without saying. Don’t starve yourself, ever. This includes before the event. It can be really tempting to bank all of your calories for the event you are attending, but then you go to the event SO hungry. The goal is to remain in control, and if you have a tendency to lose control around food anyway, going to the event super hungry will only fuel the fire. Instead, take control of meals before or after the event. Load up on your protein and fiber. This way you will be full and satiated when you are surrounded with tempting foods.
  2. Offer to bring something. I know, I know. We were not signing up for more work and cooking when we got invited to that pool party. However, for me, I like to know that there will be some solid choices there. I always offer to bring a fruit or vegetable tray. At least that way you know there will be some healthy options to add to your plate.
  3. Start with protein. As you’re building your plate at the event, start with protein. Load up on the grilled chicken or a burger (maybe skip the bun). I do stay away from processed meats like hot dogs at all costs, but that is another topic for another day. From there, load up on fruits and veggies. When your plate is full of protein and fiber, there is a little less room for the mac and cheese or other more calorie dense options. This will keep these foods at smaller portions, but still allow you to enjoy some of your favorites.
  4. Focus on people, not food. Be intentional about connecting with the people at the party. This may seem obvious, but if you take your focus off of the food and focus on the people you are celebrating or trying to connect with, you may be able to keep from being so food focused.
  5. Have a thoughtful serving of your favorite food. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a scoop of ice cream, your favorite baked good, or a serving of Mac and Cheese. It’s all about balance, and maybe a little bit about portion size. If you want to treat yourself, do it! Pick one of your favorite foods and thoroughly enjoy it. Intentionally choose to eat that special food, and then jump right back into eating for your goals. One meal or even one day is not going to completely derail your progress unless you let it.

Let this be your encouragement that you can attend these events and enjoy them! They also DON’T have to derail your progress. You can do this!
